Any time children are going to be near water, there are rules involved—wear sunscreen, walk/don’t run, no pushing, etc. But here at the Y, there’s one rule that outweighs all the others: Never get in the water without an adult’s permission.

“We know that 88 percent of drownings happen under adult supervision. At first glance, parents and caregivers may think a child is playing, but instead that child is struggling,” said Ashley Jordan from the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA. The fact that drowning is silent makes it all the more important to watch children closely when water is around—whether that’s a swimming pool, lake, ocean or even bathtub.
City and state officials are welcoming $5.7 in state bonds for two key projects having to do with child care and affordable housing.
