Lifeguard Certification Course

This lifeguard certification course provides entry-level participants ages 15 and older with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

This course is a blended learning format of online and in person instruction. The online portion must be completed before taking the in person portion of the course. Online portion will be available at time of registration.

In-person portion of the class

  • Dates/Times: You must be available for all three. 
  • April 14 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • April 21 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • April 28 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Age: Must be fifteen years old and older to participate 
  • Pre-Test: All participants must pass this test. Swim 300 yards (12 laps) continuously on front, tread water for 2 minutes using legs only, and complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds (surface dive to retrieve a 10 pound object). Must be fifteen years old or older to participate.

Lifeguard Recertification Course

This abbreviated lifeguarding course briefly reviews course information and allows practice of skills and knowledge before testing. Current certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required to participate. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certification for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for two years. Choose your class.

American Red Cross Babysitting Class 

Learn leadership skills, how to diaper and feed infants, how to handle choking emergencies, rescue breathing, basic first aid and lots more. Bring a pen, note book and a bag lunch. Includes Babysitter’s Training Handbook, DVD & Emergency Reference Guide. (For ages 11 - 15 years old.) 

Class time is 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Choose your date and location.

General Refund Policy: If any class or program is canceled by the YMCA, a full refund of paid program fees, plus membership fees if taken out solely to participate in the canceled class, will be made by check from the YMCA. Other membership, program, joiner’s and drafting fee are nonrefundable. Any program or fitness classes not held for holidays or due to inclement weather are not refundable nor transferable. Red Cross classes are nonrefundable. The only exception is if the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA cancels the class.
